Creating exceptional public places and parkland on the Island is the important early catalyst in bringing the Island back to life. Starting in 2008, GIPEC will begin designing a new 40-acre park, a 2.2 mile Great Promenade along the water, and a restoration of 33 acres of historic landscapes. Including the open areas of the National Monument, Governors Island will be home to more than 100 acres of public green space.

In 2006, the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation launched a competition to design new open spaces on Governors Island. The leading landscape architects in the world submitted proposals. In December 2007, GIPEC announced the winning team:

  • West 8
  • Rogers Marvel
  • Diller Scofidio + Renfro
  • Quennell Rothschild
  • SMWM

This acclaimed team will design a legacy project for all New Yorkers – a sustainable and unique park for the 21st century.

The competition was intended to choose a “team, not a scheme.” Moving forward in 2008 and beyond, GIPEC and the design team will begin to work with the public to design a compelling new park. GIPEC will be soliciting public input on the park designs and public programs.
