Visitors to Governors Island are welcome
to bring their own bikes or rent one while here. Motorized
and battery powered vehicles and bicycles are not permitted
on Governors Island, all bicycles must be human powered.
Bringing your own bike
Visitors are invited to bring their bikes to Governors
Island every Saturday, Sunday and Holiday Monday through
September 30.
The free public ferries to Governors Island take bicyclists and pedestrians to Governors Island during its public hours (Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day from 10 AM to 7 PM).
In Manhattan, free ferries leave from the Battery Maritime Building. Visitors with bikes can board the ferry directly through the slips in the Battery Maritime Building.
In Brooklyn, free ferries leave from Pier 6 in Brooklyn
Bridge Park. Ferries depart approximately every 20 minutes.
For events at the Governors Beach Club after Governors
Island is closed to the general public, please refer
to the specific event website for information and regulations
about bikes at these events and shows.
Renting Bikes
Bikes, quadracycles and tandems can be rented on Governors Island.
Rental rates are as follows:
For comfort bicycles on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor
Day:
- $15 for 2 hours, $25 all day
For children's bicycles on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day:
- $10 for 2 hours, $20 all day
On Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day,
visitors may also rent:
- Small QuadCycle $25 for a half hour, $35 an hour
- Large QuadCycle $30 for a half hour, $40 for an
hour
- Tandem bikes $25 for two hours, $45 all day
Adult tricycles are available to rent at the regular adult bicycle price and use is limited to visitors with balance problems or special needs. These tricycles are rented at the same rates as adult bicycles.
On Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, last rental is at 4:30 and all bikes must be returned by 5:30.
All rentals include a helmet free of charge. Anyone under 18 years old is required to wear a helmet. Kids equipment only for children one year old and up.
A valid photo ID (US State issued driver's license or passport) is required as a deposit, to be held for the duration of the ride, for each adult rental.
Organized groups larger than eight require a credit card deposit, to be charged in the event of any loss, damage or theft. One chaperone per eight minors (under 18 years of age) is required
Bike and Roll's™ Free Bike Holiday Monday program
Through Bike and Roll's™ Free Bike Holiday Monday program (on Memorial Day and Labor Day), adult and children's bikes are free for up to one hour. All free bikes must be returned to Bike and Roll™ by 5:30 PM.
Quadracycles and tandems can be rented on Holiday Mondays for a fee.
