Learn how to prune your garden’s fruit trees to enhance their health and productivity. Pruning fruit trees can help them grow and thrive for years to come, shape the tree to fit your space, and keep the harvest accessible from the ground.

Recipients of past Open Orchard fruit trees are invited to join this workshop for additional training on the upkeep of their trees and to choose scionwood to bring back to their gardens for grafting.

About the Facilitator

Sam Van Aken is a contemporary artist who works beyond traditional modes of art making, crossing artistic genres and disciplines to develop new perspectives on such themes as communication, botany, agriculture, climatology, and the ever-increasing impact of technology. Van Aken’s interventions in the natural and public realm are seen as metaphors that serve as the basis of narrative, sites of place making, and in some cases even become the basis of scientific research. The Open Orchard, his large-scale public artwork commissioned through Governors Island Arts, is on view on Governors Island.
