2011 Season Offers Old Favorites and New Programs for Island Visitors

[/caption] Today we announced our 2011 calendar of events, which offers a diverse array of art exhibits, cultural and recreational programs that are free to the public. Once again, visitors will be able to take free ferries from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to enjoy all the Island has to offer. The Island will be open every Friday – Sunday from May 27-September 25 and for the first time ever, the Island will also be open on the holiday Mondays of Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Visitors will again be able to access the entire Historic District, promenade and Picnic Point to enjoy acres of green space and miles of car free biking. Visitors are welcome to bring their own bikes or rent one while visiting. Many of theIsland’s most popular programs will be returning, including Bike and Roll’s™ Free Bike Fridays, the Children’s Museum of the Arts Free Island Outpost program and FIGMENT’s artist designed miniature golf course. Free swings, hammocks, Adirondack chairs and picnic tables will again be located around the Island for the public to use. And of course, visitors will be able to see more than a dozen incredible sculptures located around the Island as a part of the Mark di Suvero at Governors Island exhibition that is being presented by the Storm King Art Center. So only two more weeks until visitors can come out to the Island to enjoy public art, swings at Picnic Point and much more.
