Celebrate Labor Day Weekend on Governors Island
Sep 3, 2009 8:17 pm
While Governors Island won’t be open on Labor Day itself, we are planning to celebrate from Friday — Sunday with some incredible events that everyone can enjoy. Of course, there will be Bike and Roll’s Free Bike Fridays where you can borrow a bike for free to enjoy more than five miles of car-free biking. If biking isn’t your style, come out to watch the fifth annual Swim Around the Island where dozens of swimmers will take to the harbor waters to swim two miles around Governors Island. On Sunday, the NYC Pro Swim will feature Olympic medalists and other professional swimmers in a 10 K swim in the waters between Castle Williams and Picnic Point. Also on Sunday, more than 1,000 runners will take to the roads of Governors Island in the 9⁄11 Run to Remember which will remember all those whose lives were lost on September 11, 2001. There will be multiple places on the Island where visitors can cheer on those who are running in support of charities related to September 11. The 4 Heads will open the Second Annual Governors Island Art Fair on Saturday that will feature the works of more than 150 artists! And in addition to these special events, visitors can picnic, visit Water Taxi Beach, see Creative Time’s PLOT 09: This World and Nearer Ones, and celebrate the unofficial end of summer right in the middle of New York Harbor.
