Chautauqua Institution Brings Renowned Programs to Governors Island

[/caption] On Saturday, October 2, the Chautauqua Institution and the World Monuments Fund will bring an afternoon of programs focusing on religion, culture, history and architecture to Governors Island. The event, “Reflection of Sacred Spaces, a Chautauqua 2010 Theme,” features four renowned lecturers who will explore these themes in talks that are open to the public. The event is the first time Chautauqua has held a program here. Trinity Wall Street is hosting the afternoon which is taking place in St. Cornelius Chapel on the Island. At the conclusion of each talk, the public is invited to ask questions, make comments and take part in the dialogue. The schedule of talks is as follows: - Bonnie Burnham, President & CEO, World Monuments Fund 1 p.m. · Lecture title: “Preserving Sacred Spaces in a Secular World”

- Jeffrey Simpson, Historian; author of American Elegy: A Family Memoir and Chautauqua: An American Utopia 3 p.m. · Lecture title: “Chautauqua and the Architecture of Community”
- Ori Z. Soltes, Professor, Georgetown University 4 p.m. · Lecture title: “Jerusalem as a Sacred Space”
