Bloomberg, Governor David A. Paterson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and State Senator Daniel L. Squadron announced an agreement on the long-term development, funding and governance of Governors Island in which New York City will have the primary responsibility to develop and operate the Island. At the press conference, the Mayor joked that the first order of business for the new City entity would be to find a new name. Sounds like a good excuse for another naming contest  … The agreement also makes way for the release of the release of the Governors Island Park and Public Space Master Plan for 87 acres of open green space, designed by West 8. As our readers know, the park and public open space project will restore existing landscapes in the National Historic District, transform the southern half of the island and create a 2.2 mile Great Promenade along the waterfront. An important outcome of the agreement is the City’s ability to now unlock available funding for the important next steps in the transformation of the Island: environmental review, land use review and schematic design for the 87 acres of park and public spaces, and the first phase of construction, which restore the historic landscapes and make the Historic District more welcoming to visitors. The park and public spaces master plan was developed with ideas from thousands of New Yorkers and your input into the plan and the next stages of design and review will be critical. Check back here for more opportunities to get involved!
