This year’s celebration features a new 6‑part Ken Burns documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” starting tonight on PBS. Our nearest and dearest National Park, the Governors Island National Monument, has been celebrating with special lectures, tours and volunteer programs. If you haven’t had a chance to follow along on one of thier historic tours, you’re missing out. If you’re already in love with your National Parks and want to show your appreciation, take note: Saturday, September 26 is “Servicewide Volunteer Day.” The National Parks Service has several fun volunteer opportunities for photographers, birders and gardeners. Visit www.nps.gov/gois or call 212−825−3045 for more information/reservations.
