Food Fes­ti­vals and Events Com­ing to Gov­er­nors Island

Sev­er­al unique food fes­ti­vals are com­ing to the Island over the next six weeks”][/​caption] Gov­er­nors Island is wel­com­ing sev­er­al new food fes­ti­vals and events over the next six weeks. The events include Parked, a food truck fes­ti­val, the Vendy Awards, which rec­og­nize out­stand­ing local street ven­dors, the bar­beque fes­ti­val Pig Island and Okto­ber­fest. This Sun­day, the cre­ators of the BKLYN Yard bring Parked to the Island. Parked will fea­ture more than a dozen food trucks, includ­ing The Jamaican Dutchy Truck, Rick­shaw Dumpling, Green Pirate juice, Joyride Truck, Red Hook Lob­ster Pound, Van Leeuwan Arti­san Ice Cream, Halo Berlin, The Cin­na­mon Snail, Kelvin Nat­ur­al Slush Co, Her­melin­da Mex­i­cana and oth­ers. There will also be spe­cial­ly select­ed craft beers for sale for those vis­i­tors who are over 21.The event itself is free and vis­i­tors will be able to pur­chase food and drinks from all par­tic­i­pat­ing ven­dors. Lat­er this month, the Sixth Annu­al Vendy Awards will come to the Island. New York­ers have nom­i­nat­ed their favorite street ven­dors who will com­pete in a cook off to deter­mine New York City’s best street ven­dor. Final­ists are: 
  • Bistro Truck (Moroc­can-Mediter­ranean Bistro)
  • El Rey de Sabor (Puebla Style Mexican)
  • King of Falafel and Shawar­ma (Mid­dle Eastern)
  • Pat­a­con Pisao (Venezue­lan Street Food)
  • Schnitzel and Things (Aus­tri­an cui­sine with a new Amer­i­can twist)
The pub­lic will be able to access the Winner’s Cir­cle at the event, which will also fea­ture live music and per­for­mances. Gov­er­nors Island vis­i­tors with­out tick­ets will be able to sam­ple award-win­ning food from past Vendy win­ners who will be sta­tioned around the Island. Octo­ber events include Pig Island, a culi­nary fes­ti­val fea­tur­ing bar­beque pre­pared by near­ly two dozen chefs from Jimmy’s No. 43, Porchet­ta, Bobo, But­ter and more. Pig Island is the sec­ond bar­beque fes­ti­val on the Island this year and fol­lows the tremen­dous­ly pop­u­lar Meatopia event that drew thou­sands to the Island this past July. The fes­ti­val is a fea­tured event of New York’s Craft Beer Week. Tick­ets can be pur­chased in advance and a por­tion of the pro­ceeds will be donat­ed to Food Sys­tems Net­work NYC. MeanRed Pro­duc­tions is also pro­duc­ing the final food event of the sea­son. Okto­ber­fest will fea­ture Okto­ber­fest inspired food, includ­ing fun­nel cake and bratwurst from Halo Berlin. Oth­er food options will also be offered by Green­point Food Mar­ket and BKLYN Yard food ven­dors. There will also be more than 50 arti­sanal beers avail­able as well. Activ­i­ties at the fes­ti­val will include a root beer gar­den for kids, face paint­ing, a live brass band and a farm stand with local pro­duce. So come with your appetite and get ready to enjoy the last six weeks of the Island’s pub­lic access season.
