Free Fourth of July Fun on Governors Island

[/caption] Governors Island is open this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and July 4th Monday. On Friday, you can come out from 10 — 5. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, you can visit from 10 — 7. Due to the location of the fireworks, Governors Island isn’t open for fireworks viewing and will close at 7 PM on the 4th. So you may not see fireworks from here, but here are ten things you can do this weekend: 1. Swing in a hammock at Picnic Point and pay tribute to the Statue of Liberty by enjoying the best views of her in all of New York City. 2. Grab a club and a ball and play a free round of miniature golf on Figment’s artist designed course. 3. See 11 incredible sculptures by Mark di Suvero in Storm King’s exhibition that is located throughout the Island. 4. Hear the first ever classical music concert in Colonels Row at the Rite of Summer concert on Saturday afternoon. 5. Grab a free bike on Free Bike Fridays or rent or bring your own the other days to experience 5 miles of car free biking. 6. Check out the Added Value farm and Earth Matters’ compost learning center to feel the dirt under your feet. 7. Explore all the wonderful art exhibits in buildings around the Island (and even one in the Liggett Hall arch)! 8. Learn from a teaching artist at the Children’s Museum of the Arts Free Art Island Outpost. 9. Experience one of the National Park Service’s programs to learn more about the Island’s history and New York Harbor on this patriotic weekend. 10. Clown around with the Big Apple Circus on the Parade Ground and learn how to juggle, walk on stilts and other circus tricks. We hope you can enjoy this long weekend out here on the Island.
