Just a little over a month after Mayor Bloomberg waived an orange flag to signal the start of demolition, Liberty Village on Governors Island’s southern tip is gone. The 8 acres of new open space and esplanade liberated by the demoltion is part of the the 40 acre park and 2.2 mile Great Promenade being planned by GIPEC and West 8. But by next summer, the area will become a temporary picnic and play area with stunning views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. In other words, dare we say, we’re getting ready for the GREATEST (temporary) PICNIC AND PLAY AREA ON EARTH.
