Gov­er­nors Island Receives Spe­cial Recog­ni­tion from the Munic­i­pal Art Society

Frieden)”][/​caption] The Gov­er­nors Island Preser­va­tion and Edu­ca­tion Cor­po­ra­tion has been award­ed the Munic­i­pal Art Society’s Spe­cial Recog­ni­tion Award. The award is giv­en to an orga­ni­za­tion that has had a pro­found impact on New York in a remark­ably short time. The award was giv­en at MAS’ annu­al meet­ing yes­ter­day evening. The cita­tion reads as fol­lows: The Munic­i­pal Art Soci­ety Spe­cial Recog­ni­tion Award is pre­sent­ed to an orga­ni­za­tion which has had a pro­found impact on New York in a remark­ably short dura­tion – as recog­ni­tion for entre­pre­neur­ship, imag­i­na­tion and cre­ativ­i­ty. The recip­i­ent orga­ni­za­tion is one which has pro­duced a tan­gi­ble enhance­ment in the city’s liv­abil­i­ty inspir­ing com­mu­ni­ty involve­ment and par­tic­i­pa­tion, and shap­ing a won­der­ful place for the acces­si­bil­i­ty of all New York­ers.” Oth­er MAS award recip­i­ents this year includ­ed Brook­lyn Bridge Park, the Muse­um of Chi­nese in Amer­i­ca and Dance Etcetera. Over the past sev­er­al years, Gov­er­nors Island has grown steadi­ly in pop­u­lar­i­ty and has become a place for vis­i­tors to enjoy unique and free arts, cul­tur­al and recre­ation­al pro­grams. In 2005, Gov­er­nors Island wel­comed 8,000 vis­i­tors in its pub­lic access sea­son. Last year, more than 275,000 vis­i­tors came to the Island over a 60 day sea­son. Vis­i­tors to Gov­er­nors Island are drawn to the Island for many rea­sons, including: 
  • Diverse arts and cul­tur­al pro­gram­ming. From artist designed minia­ture golf to artist stu­dios, there is a diverse array of eclec­tic pro­grams for all audiences.
  • The Island as a car-free bik­ing oasis. With more than five miles of car free bik­ing and hun­dreds of free bikes avail­able to bor­row on Free Bike Fri­days, thou­sands of vis­i­tors of all ages now enjoy bik­ing in the mid­dle of the Harbor.
  • Unique oppor­tu­ni­ties for par­tic­i­pa­tion and pub­lic input. Through Post-It™ notes, the Gov­er­nors Island blog and a web­site, mem­bers of the pub­lic give their ideas and feed­back about the future park and pub­lic spaces on the Island.
  • Gov­er­nors Island pro­vides City res­i­dents with the expe­ri­ence of tak­ing a free vaca­tion with­out ever leav­ing the City. Locat­ed only sev­en min­utes from Low­er Man­hat­tan and three min­utes from Brook­lyn, the Island offers spec­tac­u­lar views, free pro­grams, ham­mocks and oth­er ameni­ties acces­si­ble to all.
 Gov­er­nors Island is open to the pub­lic every Fri­day, Sat­ur­day and Sun­day through Octo­ber 10.
