Throughout the summer, visitors to Governors Island have been privileged to see the production of Amelia, a play set in the Civil War era and performed in Fort Jay, a historic building previously used as a prison. The plot centers on a woman who enlists in the army pretending to be a man. She then is deliberately captured and taken to a prison, all in the hopes that she will be able to find her husband there. The play has been a great success since its opening May 26 and was recently reviewed by Bruce Chadwick for the History News Network who said “Amelia is an absorbing play with a two person cast that recreates Civil War history with uncanny accuracy and delivers a knockout story of young lovers caught up in one of history’s great wars.” The full article is linked here:
Amelia is performed Thursday-Sunday at 3PM. Unfortunately, the last weekend of performances is approaching (June 16⁄17). Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible play. Tickets are free if you reserve them at www.ameliatheplay.com. Come out and see the play and enjoy all else the island has to offer!
