Mystic Seaport Exhibit Features 1830 Painting of Castle Williams

[/caption] This week, “Treasures from the Collection,” an exhibition featuring paintings, artifacts and ship models, opened at the Mystic Seaport. One incredible painting that is a part of this unique show is Thomas Birch’s 1830 painting entitled “Castle William in New York Harbor.” The painting shows Castle Williams and Governors Island from the vantage point of Lower Manhattan. And while the Island looks quite a bit different than it did in the early 19th century, the exterior of the Castle looks much the same. You can see it for yourself this summer when the Island opens on May 26!
