We’re stumped. We are furiously getting ready to open up eight new acres of grassy, gorgeous harborfront to our visitors next summer, and the spot needs a new name. Much of the new open space is on the spot where Liberty Village stood, and all of it is within the site of the 40-acre park we’re busy master planning right now. We’re not going to be modest about this: the new open space will be one of the best picnic spots in the world. The Statue of Liberty is so close you could shake her hand. The sense of openness and expansiveness that comes from being on the prow of the Island in the middle of the harbor is transformative. Yet none of us seems to be able to come up with a name that doesn’t sound vaguely like a 10-year-old condo development: Point Liberty, Harborview Acres. You get the picture. We think you can do better, so we’re inviting our readers and friends to weigh in by posting suggestions for names below or sending them to info-gipec@empire.state.ny.us. Free ferry rides all summer long for the winner. . .
