Naming the Newest Island Resident

[caption id=“attachment_4397” align=“aligncenter” width=“300” caption=“The cat is enjoying her time on Governors Island”][/caption] We received more than 3,000 comments from our readers and callers who suggested names for the Governors Island cat. They were all great — many focused on the Island’s history (Lenape, Pagganck, Wouter), famous swimmers (Meow-chel Phelps was a popular suggestion as was Esther Williams) or reflected the cat’s characteristics (Sunny, Patches, Callie). We have narrowed the number of names down to the five that were the most popular and are now asking you to vote and select your favorite. The names are (in no particular order): Mary Ann and Ginger (think Gilligans Island) Molly Brown (for the Unsinkable Molly Brown) Salty Buttermilk (for the Buttermilk Channel which separates the Island from Brooklyn) The cat is enjoying being on the Island, is healthy, and is eating a diet of fancy feast and spending time with Island staff. We are still trying to reunite the cat with her owner if that is possible. We had her scanned to see if she has a microchip (she does not) and are posting information about her online as well. If we cannot find her owner, she will have a happy home here on the Island with a member of our boat crew. So let us know what you think! The cat needs a name!
