New Arts Development on the Island!

We are excited to announce the release of two new Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for opportunities to be a part of the redevelopment of Governors Island. For those who aren’t used to government-speak, RFPs are the way that we find the best, most creative, and most viable partners in our efforts to redevelop the Island. Today, we’re releasing two seperate RFPs. The first is to help us find an organization (or more than one) to develop and operate a temporary entertainment and food venue on an existing parking lot adjacent to our ferry landing. Think of a large tent or scaffold structure with a small restaurant/café/beer garden next door. We have no pre-set idea about what kind of performances will occur in this venue, but we look forward to your ideas. This RFP will also answer one of our more frequent questions, “where can I have a beer/glass of wine/mojito on the Island?” The second RFP is to help us find an organization (or, again, more than one) to run an artists studio program on the Island. We see this program as a way to introduce working artists to the Island on a year-round basis, and to expand opportunities for exhibition of completed work and work-in-progress. This RFP is focused on building 110, one of our existing historic buildings on the North Island. These two RFPs are a big step forward in our efforts to solidify and expand the role of arts and culture on the Island. They will build on the momentum we have already established, and take advantage of the historic buildings, the proximity to our ferry terminal, and oh yeah…You can download both RFPs from the “Planning and Development” section of our website:
Proposals are due August 28, 2008.
We are looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
