Friday’s Manhattan User’s Guide highlighted GIPEC board member Ann Buttenwieser’s new book Governors Island: Jewel of New York Harbor. The book traces Governors Island’s history as a US Army and Coast Guard base, and how the Island’s history reflects that of New York City and the country. With stories about everything from experiences of prisoners in Castle Williams to what it was like to watch a polo match here with the stunning backdrop of the New York skyline, readers will have a wonderful feel for what it was like to live and work on Governors Island over the past two centuries.
