The conservation group just officially named New York Harbor one of the country’s “Great Waters.” This designation puts the Harbor in the same league as other incredible “blue spaces” across the country, including the Great Lakes, Puget Sound and the Chesapeake Bay. Governors Island’s location at the center of New York Harbor gives us a unique appreciation for how truly incredible it is. From our vantage point, you can see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the working waterfront of Brooklyn, and the Narrows. Our visitors enjoy the incredible views of the waterway every day they visit and there are other ways our visitors enjoy the Harbor as well. Each year, hundreds participate in the Swim Around the Island and others kayak and land here when the Island is open to the public. And of course, every Governors Island visitor takes a free ferry ride on the water to get to the Island. So get out to Governors Island this public access season and discover why New York Harbor is great!
