Did you ever imagine what it looked like and what the Coast Guard left behind? Well now is your chance to find out. On Saturday, photographer Lisa Kereszi will show visitors the photos that she took after the Coast Guard left, when it was largely an abandoned place. Her work depicts the Island’s architecture, landscape and hidden spaces. In 2003, the Public Art Fund commissioned Lisa Kereszi and fellow New York-based photographer Andrew Moore to document Governors Island with a series of photographs. These photos were exhibited in 2004 by the Public Art Fund in cooperation with Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation and the Municipal Art Society. Many of our visitors have seen these photos, as they are currently hanging in the Commanding Officer’s House. They show spaces such as the movie theater, bowling alley, old Burger King and many others. Ms. Kereszi will talk about her experiences photographing the island. Following the talk, she will lead a tour into two of her favorite indoor spaces, the Officer’s Club and the Movie Theater. These buildings are normally closed to the public and will be open this Saturday only for those who attend the talk and tour. The talk and tour begin at 3 PM on Saturday, September 18, in the Commanding Officer’s House. You don’t need to RSVP and the tour doesn’t require tickets. Come see these beautiful photographs and these two unique buildings that are normally off limits to visitors.
