Polo Returns to Governors Island

[/caption] The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic will return to Governors Island on June 27. This is the third year that the Polo Classic has been played on Governors Island. Last year’s event kicked off the 2009 public access season and featured HRH Prince Henry of Wales, as well as world-renowned polo player Nacho Figueras. Thousands of Governors Island visitors came to the South Island Fields to see this exciting match with the breathtaking backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. This year’s Polo Classic features areas that require tickets and areas that are free and open to the public. Governors Island visitors can view the match for free, without tickets, from bleachers or the grass on the western side of the fields. The event will once again benefit Sentebale. When Governors Island was a military base, polo was often played here, predominantly between World War I and World War II. We are so pleased that visitors to Governors Island will again be able to experience this historic use of Governors Island and enjoy an afternoon of exciting sport in the middle of New York Harbor.
