We just announced that bike share is coming to Governors Island in the form of Free Bike Fridays. It’s especially exciting for us because we see Free Bike Fridays as a step toward the vision of free bikes for all in the future park. Bikes aren’t only a fantastic way to explore parts of the Island that are open to the public now, but they’ll also be an important part of how people experience the new parkand Great Promenade in the future. The concept of a public bike share program on Governors Island isn’t new, but West 8 elevated it to a compelling new level in their in the winning competition entry to design the future park and Great Promenade. Starting this fall, West 8, an exceedingly talented urban design and landscape architecture firm based in Rotterdam will lead a team of architects and landscape architects in designing these new open spaces. Their design vision is one where free bikes are accessible to everyone on Governors Island to explore the landscape, get around the Island, and have fun. As we’ve said before, we’ve chosen a “team, not a scheme,” so your input will be critical to shaping the final design vision for the new park and Great Promenade on Governors Island.
