Snow covered Island

Many of Governors Island’s visitors are used to seeing the Island blanketed with art installations, full of bike riders and people picnicking, playing sports, or enjoying a free performance. Since the Island is open from June — mid-October, very few New Yorkers have actually seen the Island when it is covered in snow and the trees are bare. After Wednesday’s snowstorm brought lots of new snow (and a snow day for kids and adults across the city), we thought our readers would be interested to see how beautiful Governors Island looks during the colder winter months. [caption id=“attachment_2726” align=“aligncenter” width=“300” caption=“The Commanding Officers Quarters and Nolan Park are blanketed in snow”][/caption] [caption id=“attachment_2727” align=“aligncenter” width=“300” caption=“The slopes of the Parade Ground make a good spot for sledding ”][/caption] [caption id=“attachment_2730” align=“aligncenter” width=“300” caption=“The London Plane trees in Colonels Row are bare but still look beautiful ”][/caption] Even our resident Canada geese are having a hard time staying warm! [caption id=“attachment_2733” align=“aligncenter” width=“300” caption=“Geese huddle outside of Fort Jay”][/caption]
