This weekend, June 22 – 23, there are many exciting public events being hosted on Governors Island with truly something for everyone! Highlighting the action are some fun outdoor sports, art, and a bit of history.
- RECESS Badminton: Dust off those rackets and birdies as RECESS returns to Colonel’s Row this Saturday from 12pm-5pm for their infamous outdoor badminton challenge! 32 creative organizations will go head-to-head in battle for the title of New York City’s supreme badminton champions! Festivities also include free bike rides, food vendors, a beer/wine tent, guest DJs and public courts for those inspired by the action.
- Army Heritage Day: Did you know that Governors Island has played an important role in the military history of the United States dating back to the Revolutionary War? This Saturday, come celebrate Army Heritage Day in honor those who served at Fort Jay. Visitors can also enjoy the Island from the water by renting a free kayak from Pier 101 on Governors Island, Saturday 11am-3pm.
- Bird Friends of Governors Island: Bird-lovers can gather on Saturday at 10:15am at Soissons Landing on Governors Island to meet National Parks Service volunteer birder Annie Barry for 1.5 hour informative guided tour of the Island’s wild bird life.
- Skate Truck NYC: Grab yourself a set of wheels at The Skate Truck NYC, which provides roller-skating equipment, helmets and safety gear to skaters of all ages. Get rolling on Saturday from 11am-6pm.
- Writing On It All: Artists, writers, and the public are invited to write all over the walls on the inside of an out-of-use house in Nolan Park. On Sunday from 12pm-3pm, come express yourself and be inspired by prompts relating to Governors Island.
