This Week­end: Bad­minton, Army Her­itage Day, Free Kayak­ing and More!

This week­end, June 22 – 23, there are many excit­ing pub­lic events being host­ed on Gov­er­nors Island with tru­ly some­thing for every­one! High­light­ing the action are some fun out­door sports, art, and a bit of history.

  • RECESS Bad­minton: Dust off those rack­ets and birdies as RECESS returns to Colonel’s Row this Sat­ur­day from 12pm-5pm for their infa­mous out­door bad­minton chal­lenge! 32 cre­ative orga­ni­za­tions will go head-to-head in bat­tle for the title of New York City’s supreme bad­minton cham­pi­ons! Fes­tiv­i­ties also include free bike rides, food ven­dors, a beer/​wine tent, guest DJs and pub­lic courts for those inspired by the action.
  • Army Her­itage Day: Did you know that Gov­er­nors Island has played an impor­tant role in the mil­i­tary his­to­ry of the Unit­ed States dat­ing back to the Rev­o­lu­tion­ary War? This Sat­ur­day, come cel­e­brate Army Heritage Day in hon­or those who served at Fort Jay. Vis­i­tors can also enjoy the Island from the water by rent­ing a free kayak from Pier 101 on Gov­er­nors Island, Sat­ur­day 11am-3pm.
  • Bird Friends of Gov­er­nors Island: Bird-lovers can gath­er on Sat­ur­day at 10:15am at Sois­sons Land­ing on Gov­er­nors Island to meet Nation­al Parks Ser­vice vol­un­teer bird­er Annie Bar­ry for 1.5 hour infor­ma­tive guid­ed tour of the Island’s wild bird life.
  • Skate Truck NYC: Grab your­self a set of wheels at The Skate Truck NYC, which pro­vides roller-skat­ing equip­ment, hel­mets and safe­ty gear to skaters of all ages. Get rolling on Sat­ur­day from 11am-6pm.
  • Writ­ing On It All: Artists, writ­ers, and the pub­lic are invit­ed to write all over the walls on the inside of an out-of-use house in Nolan Park. On Sun­day from 12pm-3pm, come express your­self and be inspired by prompts relat­ing to Gov­er­nors Island.
