Urban Archeologist

This week’s Crain’s New York Business features a story about Scott Jordan, an urban archeologist who has collected more than 50,000 artifacts from New York City. His interest in history and collecting items began on Governors Island, where he grew up. On his urban digs, he has found multicolored bottles, buttons made from bone, pottery, coins and pieces of porcelain dolls. He sells many of his finds at local flea markets.
We did have an “Archeological Dig” on Governors Island during the New Island Festival, which was a great draw for many of our visitors. And although you can’t dig for artifacts now, you can dig in the sand at Water Taxi Beach, or in the dirt at the Added Value Farm. And, for our visitors who want to discover the Island’s rich history, the National Park Service will begin its wonderful programs for visitors on opening day, May 27.
