Week­end Pre­view: Jalopy The­ater, Bird Talk and Tons of Art and Culture

[cap­tion id=“attachment_6039” align=“aligncenter” width=“300”] Come out to Gov­er­nors Island this week­end for art, cul­ture, recre­ation and so much more.[/caption] In addi­tion to the incred­i­ble exhibits and pro­grams tak­ing place in the Gov­er­nors Gal­leries, Build­ing 12 and Build­ing 110 this week­end, there are spe­cial events as well, includ­ing: Sat­ur­day, Sep­tem­ber 8: Jalopy Theatre’s Out­door Music on Gov­er­nors Island, Noon  Cel­e­brate the end of sum­mer with an after­noon of out­door tra­di­tion­al music at five loca­tions on Gov­er­nors Island, fea­tur­ing 15 local acts per­form­ing a vari­ety of Appalachi­an old-time string band music, Amer­i­cana, jug band, blues, Son Jaro­cho, and orig­i­nal folk songs. That’s right, 25 hours of live music in a sin­gle day. The free street music fair takes place along the cir­cu­lar path on the north­ern side of Gov­er­nors Island, where atten­dees can leisure­ly walk and bicy­cle between five loca­tions where bands will each play 45-minute sets. Fea­tured per­form­ers include: M. Shang­hai String Band, Willy Gantrim, Radio Jaro­cho, The Whiskey Spit­ters, The 4 O’clock Flow­ers, Karen Duffy, The Broth­er­hood of the Jug­band Blues, Fer­al Fos­ter, The May­bells, the East Riv­er String Band, the Easy Rollers, and the fab­u­lous duo of Pat Con­te and Joe Bel­lulovich. Sun­day, Sep­tem­ber 9: Earth Mat­ter Hosts Bird Friend’s Walk and Talk,” 10 AM (Take the 10 AM fer­ry and meet at Sois­sons Dock) Guid­ed by Annie Bar­ry, a long time Nation­al Park Ser­vice vol­un­teer and Nation­al Audubon Soci­ety mem­ber, you’ll take a dis­cov­ery walk around the island perime­ter. See which of our fine feath­ered friends call this ter­ri­to­ry their home. Learn their secrets and wit­ness their beau­ty. A spe­cial stop will be made at the Earth Mat­ter Com­post Learn­ing Cen­ter to meet the famous com­post­ing chick­ens, and the grack­les and spar­rows who keep them com­pa­ny! Governor’s Island is a rare and spe­cial place that is fast becom­ing one of NYC’s pre­mier pub­lic green spaces. Bring binoc­u­lars and wear com­fort­able walk­ing shoes. This is also the sec­ond week­end of the 4 Heads’ Gov­er­nors Island Art Fair. So be sure to stop by Build­ing 12 to check it out!
