Get ready for three full days of fun this Labor Day weekend on Governors Island. Programs include food festivals, art and design exhibits and workshops, free biking and a diverse array of cultural activities. Labor Day weekend is also the last chance to enjoy some of the Island’s ongoing exhibits and programs. Governors Island remains open on weekends through September 30.
Stop by Colonels Row for Pig Island on Saturday and the Sunday PicNYC on Sunday. Pig Island features food from more than two dozen amazing local chefs while PicNYC features craft beer and wines alongside some of the City’s great vendors. After lunch, tour the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum’s Graphic Design – Now in Production exhibition which closes on Sunday afternoon. Other programs to visit on the Island include: the Earth Matter Compost Learning Center at Picnic Point where visitors can see the Island’s resident chickens, goats and bees. At the Governors Galleries, take the last opportunity to see handmade items at the Better than Jam’s pop-up shop. On Monday, visitors can borrow a bike for free for up to one hour for the last Free Bike Monday of the season, and can also enjoy the sounds of the Rite of Summer Music Festival taking place on Colonels Row. And if that’s all a bit too much for you, there are hammocks.
