Animated Soil Workshop

Join Cindy Stock­ton-Moore at Swale for an all-ages work­shop that uses sim­ple ani­ma­tion tech­niques to explore the com­plex ecol­o­gy of under­ground life. Par­tic­i­pants will exper­i­ment with ear­ly mov­ing image devices like zoetropes and phenakisto­copes. Draw­ing inspi­ra­tion from crea­tures unearthed in the rDNA tests of soil, par­tic­i­pants will cre­ate two-frame and strip ani­ma­tions of real and imag­ined move­ment. This work­shop grows out of the com­pan­ion project Refuge: A Soil Por­trait.
