Bebop Porú

To close out the dynam­ic 2026 Gov­er­nors Island Arts’ sea­son, themed around move­ment, Bebop Porú, a free dance par­ty fea­tur­ing glob­al sounds, will pop up out­doors as a cel­e­bra­tion of a sum­mer brim­ming with art on the Island.

BeBop Porú is the musi­cal syn­the­sis of Black Amer­i­can dance music fused along­side rhythms from Africa, The Caribbean, and South Amer­i­ca. The free pub­lic dance par­ty comes from two of the three cre­ators of Pub­lic Ser­vice. With sound pow­ered by the sig­na­ture hot-pink speak­ers of Kar­lala Soundsys­tem, Mick­ey Pérez, a Brook­lyn-based DJ, brings a unique com­bi­na­tion of rhythms to the dance floor. Joined by DJ L3Ni of Soul in the Horn, this all-day par­ty cel­e­brates dias­poric sounds and brings com­mu­ni­ties togeth­er against Gov­er­nors Island’s pic­turesque back­drop of the New York skyline.

Mick­ey Pérez is a Chica­go-born and Mia­mi-raised first-gen­er­a­tion Amer­i­can of Cuban and Ecuado­ri­an descent who’s been syn­the­siz­ing African, Caribbean, South Amer­i­can, and Black Amer­i­can rhythms to New York City dance floors since 2008. A Brook­lyn res­i­dent since 2002, Mick­ey rep­re­sents and presents a non-com­mer­cial, dias­poric sound irre­spec­tive of nation­al bor­ders span­ning many dif­fer­ent rhythms & gen­res of dance music across those afore­men­tioned regions of the world.

Kar­lala Soundsystem is a Brooklyn‑based rig known for clar­i­ty, punch, and a sig­na­ture hot‑pink aes­thet­ic. We sup­port block par­ties, live shows, club nights, and cul­tur­al gath­er­ings with scal­able sys­tems and expe­ri­enced engineers.

L3Ni is a DJ, pro­duc­er, mas­ter­ing engi­neer, and the gen­er­al man­ag­er of Soul in the Horn. Based in Brook­lyn, she has worked as a mas­ter­ing engi­neer at Aer­i­al Sound Mas­ter­ing Stu­dios, pro­duc­tion man­ag­er at Chelsea Music Hall, and is an accom­plished clas­si­cal­ly trained pianist.
