City of Forest Day on Governors Island
Oct 14, 2023
Learn all about what it takes to effectively manage the unique urban forest on Governors Island at Forest for All NYC’s second annual City of Forest Day, featuring a volunteer project and a tree tour! Registration is live at the link below. Please note: this event will be held entirely outdoors on Governors Island, and is rain or shine. Please dress with the weather in mind.
Volunteer Project
9:30 – 11am
Join the Trust for Governors Island Horticulture team for a volunteer project to directly steward the Island’s trees! With over 120 acres of open space, we rely on volunteers to help care for the landscapes on Governors Island. Volunteers will promote root health and support our tree canopy through mulching, weeding, and raking projects throughout the Island.
Registration is highly encouraged. Please plan to wear appropriate clothing for an outdoor volunteer project. Tools and gloves will be provided.
Tree Tour
12pm
Join Malcolm Gore, Arborist at the Trust for Governors Island, and Annie Barry, an educator at NYC Audubon, for a walking tour to learn about the Island’s collection of 3,000+ trees, the Trust’s Horticulture team’s efforts to support this diverse urban canopy, and how they support our city’s birds.
Registration is highly encouraged to attend. Please dress with the weather in mind.
City of Forest Day is presented by Forest for All NYC in partnership with the Parks and Open Space Partners: NYC Coalition, and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. City of Forest Day is a day of activities across the city to raise awareness of the importance of the New York City urban forest and the Forest for All NYC coalition, of which Governors Island is a member.
