Learn all about what it takes to effectively manage the unique urban forest on Governors Island at Forest for All NYC’s first-ever City of Forest Day, featuring a volunteer project and a tree tour! Registration is live at the link below.
Volunteer Project
9:30 – 11am, starting at the Play Area near Liggett Terrace
Join the Trust for Governors Island Horticulture team for a volunteer project to directly steward the Island’s trees! With over 120 acres of open space, we rely on volunteers to help care for the landscapes on Governors Island. Volunteers will promote root health and support our urban forest through mulching, weeding, and raking projects throughout the Island.
Registration is highly encouraged to attend. Please wear appropriate clothing for a volunteer project. Tools and gloves will be provided.
Tree Tour
12pm, starting at the entrance of Fort Jay
Join Malcolm Gore, Arborist at the Trust for Governors Island, for a walking tour to learn about the Island’s collection of 3,000+ trees and the Trust’s Horticulture team’s efforts to support this diverse urban canopy.
Registration is highly encouraged to attend. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes for a walking tour of Governors Island.
City of Forest Day is presented by Forest for All NYC in partnership with the Parks and Open Space Partners: NYC Coalition, and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. City of Forest Day is a day of activities across the city to raise awareness of the importance of the New York City urban forest and the Forest for All NYC coalition, which Governors Island is a member of.
