Grids are organizing systems that support efficient movement but also create confinements within their unifying orders. From above, grids appear as perfectly shaped islands, but shift as one’s gaze descends and gradually gets lost in them. When thinking of an urban grid system, oftentimes, the first example that comes up is NYC, particularly Manhattan, one of the busiest and diverse islands.
Grids and Islands takes place on Governors Island – a smaller island in a city built on many islands – and explores organizing networks from different perspectives. Featured works question grids as structures of perfection, data management and socio-cultural connections, seeking the unseen layers and links within the interconnected blocks and islands they create.
Residency Unlimited is one of the 2025 Governors Island Arts Organizations in Residence.
