Open­ing Recep­tion Sep­tem­ber 17, 3 – 6pm

This new exhi­bi­tion fol­lows Nation­al Acad­e­my of Design’s sum­mer res­i­den­cy on Gov­er­nors Island explor­ing art, archi­tec­ture, and sus­tain­abil­i­ty. Fea­tur­ing works by artists and archi­tects includ­ing Adrián S. Bará, Christi­na Bar­rera, Hugo Basti­das NA, Jane Ben­son, Eliz­a­beth Demaray, Zac Hac­mon, Elana Her­zog NA, Lisa Hoke NA, Stephanie Lin, Jim Osman NA, Camille Rouza­ud, Jean Shin, Dianne Smith, Ed Smith NA, and Michael Kel­ly Williams.

Orga­nized in part­ner­ship with Mate­ri­als for the Arts, the res­i­den­cy brought togeth­er six artists who engaged the Island’s site and his­toric con­text over the course of six weeks this sum­mer. The exhi­bi­tion fea­tures work pro­duced on-site by res­i­den­cy artists in dia­logue with com­ple­men­tary works by artists and archi­tects from out­side the group of residents.

Materia/​Material includes art­works and archi­tec­tur­al instal­la­tions that express con­cepts of regen­er­a­tion, mate­ri­al­i­ty, sus­tain­abil­i­ty, his­to­ries of exhi­bi­tion mak­ing and exper­i­men­tal dis­play, rebuild­ing from scratch, engage­ment with and inte­gra­tion of the nat­ur­al envi­ron­ment, and ephemer­al and mobile structures.
