Melinda K. Santiago: Horizons Below
Swale
Based on a previous residency with the Urban Soils Institute, Santiago will develop an installation of mixed-media painting, assemblage, and textile rooted in a symbolic soil profile of Governors Island. The work traces the Island’s layered ecological and cultural histories through the lens of the Anthropocene. Drawing on local urban soils, photography, and influences including psychogeography, Impressionism, and Arte Povera, she explores the ecological uncanny embedded in place, matter, and memory.
Swale is one of the 2026 Governors Island Arts Organizations in Residence.
