Melinda K. Santiago: Horizons Below

Based on a pre­vi­ous res­i­den­cy with the Urban Soils Insti­tute, San­ti­a­go will devel­op an instal­la­tion of mixed-media paint­ing, assem­blage, and tex­tile root­ed in a sym­bol­ic soil pro­file of Gov­er­nors Island. The work traces the Island’s lay­ered eco­log­i­cal and cul­tur­al his­to­ries through the lens of the Anthro­pocene. Draw­ing on local urban soils, pho­tog­ra­phy, and influ­ences includ­ing psy­cho­geog­ra­phy, Impres­sion­ism, and Arte Povera, she explores the eco­log­i­cal uncan­ny embed­ded in place, mat­ter, and memory.
