"On This Site—Native Long Island" Pop-up Exhibit + Conversation

On This Site — Native Long Island is a pop-up exhi­bi­tion pre­sent­ing staged pho­tographs by Jere­my Den­nis (Shin­necock) high­light­ing Native his­to­ries. Known for its well-drained mar­itime glacial soils that Indige­nous peo­ple stew­ard­ed for thou­sands of years, Pau­manok was lat­er dis­rupt­ed by colo­nial­ism and land dis­pos­ses­sion. In 2010 the Shin­necock achieved fed­er­al land recog­ni­tion after 30 years of peti­tion­ing. A pre­sen­ta­tion by Den­nis and con­ver­sa­tion with Dr. Lara Evans (Chero­kee) will explore the role cin­e­mat­ic sto­ry­telling and map­ping play in reveal­ing the colo­nial era­sure of native histories.
