OtherWorlds Fair

Oth­er­Worlds Fair is a free pub­lic fair, pro­duced by youth who are employed in a six-week pro­gram called Beam Sum­mer Stu­dios. In this pro­gram, 70 – 80 youth from NYC pub­lic schools explore one of six mul­ti­me­dia dis­ci­plines: Fash­ion & Tex­tiles; Food & Sci­ence; Sto­ry­telling & Nar­ra­tive Media; Music & Per­for­mance; Design & Fab­ri­ca­tion; and Work­shop Design.

On Sat­ur­day, August 15^th join this cohort as they explore how peo­ple, mate­ri­als, com­mu­ni­ties, and tech­nolo­gies are con­stant­ly chang­ing and shap­ing expe­ri­ence. Through fash­ion, film, food, music, move­ment, design, and hands-on work­shops, this year’s Oth­er­Worlds fair invites atten­dees to expe­ri­ence trans­for­ma­tion in action.

Each work­shop invites you to trans­form sim­ple mate­ri­als into some­thing unique­ly yours.

• KALEI­DO­SCOPE: See the world change in front of your eyes as you build your own cus­tomiz­able, light-up kaleidoscope.
• WOOD­EN PUP­PETS: Learn hands-on wood­work­ing skills to cre­ate a mag­ne­tized, move­able, char­ac­ter wood­en pup­pet per­fect as a fridge mag­net, action fig­ure or what­ev­er else your mind conjures.
• STOP MOTION ANI­MA­TION GAME:‍Step into your own world and tell a sto­ry with this hands-on gam­i­fied ani­ma­tion work­shop. Explore design, sto­ry­telling and stop-motion with unex­pect­ed nar­ra­tive twists.
• COL­LAPSI­BLE PAPER LANTERNS: Use cir­cuit­ry and con­struc­tion skills to make glow­ing col­lapsi­ble paper lanterns to hang in your bed­room or take on a night walk!
• Through­out the day, Street Lab will host addi­tion­al drop-in work­shops that explore the con­cept of play. Street Lab is a part­ner of BEAM Center.
