Escaping Time: Art from U.S. Prisons

Escap­ing Time: Art from U.S. Pris­ons exhibits and sells art­works cre­at­ed with­in prison walls nation­wide. Through art, Escap­ing Time works to change the nar­ra­tive and break the stereo­type of what soci­ety imag­ines when think­ing about the incar­cer­at­ed. The art serves as a reminder that the men and women in prison are more than their charges. Vis­i­tors to Escap­ing Time’s exhi­bi­tions come away with a more nuanced view of the crim­i­nal jus­tice sys­tem and the need for soci­ety to have a vest­ed inter­est in pro­grams to bet­ter pre­pare pris­on­ers to suc­cess­ful­ly reen­ter society.

Their focus this year is to exhib­it the lengths peo­ple will go to in order to express them­selves while in spaces of con­fine­ment. Vis­i­tors will have a chance to con­nect with vol­un­teer staff, all of whom are sys­tem impact­ed, and will leave with a more nuanced view of the carcer­al sys­tem and the humans who are dis­ap­peared behind prison walls.
