Governors Island National Monument - Governors Island National Monument - Fort Jay

Fort Jay is locat­ed on Gov­er­nors Island in New York Har­bor, one half-mile from the south­ern tip of Man­hat­tan. The fort is said to have acquired the name Fort Jay” in 1798 for John Jay, then Gov­er­nor of New York State. Fort Jay is part of the Gov­er­nors Island Nation­al Mon­u­ment and is under the stew­ard­ship of the Nation­al Park Service.

Due to tem­po­rary con­struc­tion, access to Fort Jay is lim­it­ed to the West Sal­ly Port entrance, locat­ed near Colonels Row (click here for a map). Please note, this entrance fea­tures stairs and uneven/​grassy ground. Fort Jay remains open to the pub­lic Wednes­day-Sun­day, 10AM-4PM. We apol­o­gize for any inconvenience.
